How can I prepare for a trip to Brazil?
Read the whole advisory, then plan the actual visit
This guide covers preparation and response. For the broader country question, see Is Brazil safe?; return here to turn that reading into tasks before departure. Neither article can assess your individual circumstances or replace current official instructions.
The U.S. Department of State’s Brazil advisory, issued August 31, 2026, carries a Level 2 headline and separate warnings covering particular areas. It also distinguishes restrictions on U.S. government employees from general traveler advice. Read the sections relevant to your destinations, rather than treating the national level as a numerical average.
The advisory’s summary lists Brasília’s satellite cities under “Do Not Travel”; the satellite-city subsection uses “Exercise increased caution”. Do not turn that inconsistency into a confident rule for every visitor or neighborhood; consult the current official text and seek clarification where needed. U.S. citizens can use the advisory’s STEP enrollment and consular links. Other nationalities should also consult their own government’s advice.
We corrected an error in our earlier version: it described the national advisory as averaging local risks and used the same headline level assigned to other countries as reassurance. That comparison did not establish equivalent conditions. We removed it. Our September 14, 2026 editorial review also replaced an unsourced percentage about express-kidnapping cases resolved in less than six hours with a task-based preparation tool. This is a record of our editing work, not a claim of firsthand traveler outcomes.
An advisory headline is a reading instruction, not a personal safety score.
Before departure: documents, health and a reachable contact
Start with the passport you will actually travel on, the purpose of the trip and the intended stay. Use Brazil’s official visa service and the responsible Brazilian consular post to determine the applicable route. Do not rely on an old visa-exemption blog or assume a rule for one nationality applies to another. A visa and permission to enter are not interchangeable guarantees.
Arrange a pre-travel health discussion early. Brazil’s Ministry of Health guidance recommends seeking medical advice preferably four to eight weeks before travel and packing medication as the manufacturer instructs, in its original box and with its leaflet. Ask the clinician which documents you need for your medication. Individual vaccine, medication and fitness-to-travel decisions belong with a qualified clinician. If departure is closer, seek advice rather than guessing a regimen from a destination article.
Read the travel-insurance policy you are considering: destination coverage, medical assistance, exclusions, claim procedure and the number to call. Save the actual policy and assistance contact where you can retrieve them without the phone you normally use. This is a planning suggestion, not a statement that every policy covers a particular activity or expense.
Choose one trusted person to hold a current version of your trip contacts. Agree how you will check in and what they should do if contact is lost. Share only what that person needs, through a channel you trust. A public social post is not a useful substitute for that arrangement. If traveling with children or documents issued by different countries, check the relevant consular instructions for that exact situation.
Make the first arrival easy to verify
Write down the airport, accommodation address and a reachable receiving contact before departure. Keep the address in a form you can show locally. Confirm how you will reach the accommodation, what is included and how a delayed flight changes the arrangement. A reservation screenshot is useful only if it identifies the actual provider and current booking.
At Galeão, for example, the airport publishes taxi and application guidance. Use the operator’s current instructions for the airport you are actually using. This source does not establish rules for Santos Dumont, Guarulhos or every Brazilian airport. Terminal arrangements can change; avoid copying a meeting point from an old article.
Treat arrival as its own task even if the rest of the visit is flexible. A late flight, luggage issue or failed mobile connection should not leave you searching for the accommodation’s name. Put essential details in an offline note, and keep an appropriate backup separate from the primary device. Do not publish your ticket, room number or live itinerary to obtain help with a routine booking.
For a working visit, distinguish transportation from any separately requested private security. A premium category is not a protection guarantee. Our Brazil transportation guide explains the scope questions without assuming every tourist needs an armored car.
Ten checks, with the source or contact each one needs
This is an editorial checklist, not a city safety league table. Crime counts, opinion surveys and travel-advisory categories measure different things. Combining them into a single traveler risk score would require a defensible method and comparable inputs; we have not established those here. “No comparable value” must not become a zero-risk rating.
| Check | Source or contact | What to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Passport and visa route | Brazilian consular authority | Applicable instructions for your passport and trip purpose |
| Destination warnings | Current government travel advisory | Relevant sections and the date checked |
| U.S. citizen enrollment, if applicable | Official STEP link in the U.S. advisory | Enrollment confirmation, if you choose to enroll |
| Health preparation | Qualified clinician; Ministry of Health guidance | Your own agreed preparation and required documents |
| Insurance assistance | Your policy issuer | Policy terms and assistance number |
| Airport arrival | Actual airport operator and booked provider | Airport, booking and current meeting instructions |
| Accommodation arrival | Accommodation’s verified contact | Address and arrival arrangements |
| Local conditions | Relevant municipal authority and venue | Current notices for the visit, with their dates |
| Emergency help | Anatel’s national service-code list | 190 police, 192 SAMU and 193 firefighters |
| Lost documents or phone | Your consulate and account providers | Official contact and recovery channels |
The authorities named in the table are linked in the surrounding text: the visa service, U.S. advisory, Ministry of Health, RIOgaleão (for Galeão only) and Anatel. STEP is reached through the advisory itself. The other rows intentionally require your own provider or destination: a generic website cannot supply a valid insurance policy, hotel contact or account-recovery credential. Save the list, or use the six-item checklist below, which condenses the main pre-departure tasks; STEP enrollment, local-condition notices and account-recovery channels still need checking on their own rows. The checklist does not transmit answers or issue a travel recommendation.
A municipal notice illustrates why the date field matters. COR-Rio’s August 2, 2026 notice announced maintenance affecting Rebouças and Elevado das Bandeiras. It is evidence of that announcement, not proof that the same restriction applies on your visit. Recheck the current municipality or venue source for your date.
A preparation checklist you control
Mark an item only when you have completed it. The tool runs in this page, forgets the checks when reloaded and does not save or send your answers. An incomplete item is a task to resolve; the number of checked boxes is not a safety score.
- Verify entry requirements with the relevant authority.
- Read the advisory sections for the actual destinations.
- Discuss personal health preparation and review insurance terms.
- Confirm airport and accommodation arrival details.
- Save official emergency and provider contacts offline.
- Agree a contact plan with a trusted person.
For example, a visitor might have a confirmed hotel but no usable arrival contact saved offline. The hotel reservation is complete; the arrival task is not. Resolve the missing field instead of assigning the entire trip a reassuring label. This is a fictional example of using the checklist, not an account of a client incident.
If something goes wrong: separate urgent help from administration
For an immediate emergency in Brazil, the national service codes published by Anatel include 190 for Polícia Militar, 192 for SAMU medical emergencies and 193 for firefighters. State the location and what happened as clearly as possible; follow the responder’s instructions. A concierge enquiry, insurer message or consular form is not a substitute for emergency assistance.
Once immediate needs are addressed, use the relevant official or provider channel for the problem. A lost passport involves your consulate; a stolen device or exposed account involves the carrier, bank or account provider; an insurance claim follows the insurer’s process. Preserve reference numbers and documents you are asked to retain. Do not share passwords, verification codes or recovery credentials with someone who unexpectedly offers help.
The purpose of preparation is to make the next step accessible when you are tired, delayed or without your usual device. It cannot remove uncertainty from travel. For destination reading, continue with São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, then return to the exact sources and contacts that apply to your visit.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Level 2 rating a guarantee that every part of Brazil is safe?
No. Read the dated advisory and its destination-specific sections. The headline is not an individual risk score, and restrictions on government employees should not be silently rewritten as universal traveler rules.
Do I need private security for an ordinary holiday?
A country name or this checklist cannot determine that. Start with the actual visit, current advice and your circumstances. Transportation, vehicle features and private security are different services; do not buy a protection claim solely because a vehicle is labeled premium.
What should I save offline before arrival?
The accommodation address and verified contact, airport and transfer details, travel documents or appropriate copies, insurance assistance contact, consular channel and emergency numbers. Protect sensitive material and keep a suitable backup separate from your main phone.
Which emergency numbers should I know?
Anatel lists 190 for Polícia Militar, 192 for SAMU and 193 for firefighters. Use the service appropriate to the emergency, give the location and follow the responder’s instructions.
